About the Orchestra

A Syracuse-based 17-piece concert jazz orchestra dedicated to the classic big band tradition.

Salt City Jazz Orchestra is a Syracuse-based concert jazz orchestra dedicated to the classic swing tradition. The ensemble performs repertory rooted in the Count Basie lineage and related big band literature, emphasizing time feel, balance, articulation, and ensemble cohesion.

The orchestra is structured to support artistic sustainability: a consistent rehearsal cadence, a deep roster and sub bench, and professional performance practices that allow presenters to book with confidence. While concert presentation is the primary focus, the ensemble also serves as a meaningful educational environment where emerging musicians gain experience reading and performing major repertory alongside seasoned community players.

Education & Community Impact

More than just concerts—we're building a sustainable music community.

In addition to public concerts, Salt City Jazz Orchestra supports informal music education through repertory reading, stylistic coaching, and mentored ensemble experience. Student musicians participate alongside experienced professionals, gaining real-world exposure to large-ensemble performance practice not always available in academic settings.

Community Impact

By maintaining a regular presence in Central New York, Salt City Jazz Orchestra contributes to the region's cultural vitality, supports local musicians, and helps preserve a historically significant American art form.

Our Rehearsal Model

Designed for sustainability and artistic growth.

Salt City Jazz Orchestra rehearses on a biweekly cadence, a model chosen to balance artistic rigor with long-term sustainability. This structure allows the ensemble to maintain high performance standards while remaining accessible to working musicians and students.

This isn't a limitation—it's intentional design for an ensemble that lasts.

Why 'Salt City'?

"Salt City" is Syracuse's historic nickname, dating back to the region's days as the nation's leading salt producer. We chose this name to root the orchestra firmly in Central New York's identity—connecting a distinctly American art form to a distinctly American city.

Classic swing. Salt City soul.
